Michael teams up with his ex girl-friend Fiona Glenanne a retired buddy Sam Axe and of all people his mother and brother to help ordinary citizens of Miami who are being bullied by criminals while all the time trying to restore his good name.
The character Fiona Glenanne, who is brilliantly brought to life by the actress Gabrielle Anwar, is an ex IRA gun-runner, who is in hiding in the US after falling out with her colleagues. She turns up in Miami to help her ex-boyfriend Michael after he is 'burned' by his nasty employers. Fiona's character is beautiful and fiery but with a kind nature and good heart.
Glenanne is quite a rare Irish surname and appears to be a variant of Glennon which in Irish is Mag Leannáin (from leann - a cloak). The Glenanne family appear to be associated with the north of County Tipperary where in 1011 or 1012 AD Maclonain or Lónán's son, was abbot of the monastery of Roscrea.
Again, as in the case of fictional Irish American detective Jimmy McNulty, Fiona Glenanne's fictional career has echoes in the real life of Irish America. Quite a number of IRA members sick of the violence of the Troubles and hoping for a new peaceful life took refuge in the USA, especially in the 1980s after the major jail break from the Maze prison in Northern Ireland. There have probably been others in more recent times. However, IRA operatives are usually not known for being as kind and good-natured as Fiona Glenanne.
