Brigadier General Anthony McAuliffe - the most famous Irish American soldier of World War II
With Veterans' day recently in the US and President Obama's appointment of General Martin Dempsey as commander of the US armed forces, I thought I might write this week's blog about one of the most famous Irish American soldiers of World War II, Brigadier General Anthony McAuliffe, the hero of the siege of Bastogne, fought during the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944 and January 1945.
